How Can We Stop Assaults From Being Committed Against Women? When I read the statistics on the percentage of women that experience physical abuse or sexual abuse. The numbers were significant yet not surprising. Women in general face different risks than men regarding violence and sexual abuse. Learning about the numbers of sexual abuse in other parts of the world as well as sexual trafficking, and even murder that was mostly caused by someone who they knew was heart wrenching.          When looking at the numbers in different parts of the world, it is hard to figure out how there is one right answer to stopping assaults and violence against women. In third world countries, violence amongst women is sadly part of the culture. From child marriages to genital mutilation, the answer ca varies depending on the region. Overall, I got most of the answers right on the self-quiz on the CDC website. I did however learn the statistics regarding 1 in 5 children experiencing mental health disease in their lives. Having four children myself, my first thought was on how this may or may not affect one of my own children in their lives. I also learned about the cost that mental health costs America a year. $193.2 seems like a significant amount of money that perhaps could be looked at closer. In learning more about the statitstics of mental health in America, I learned that over 40 million Americans have a mental health disorder yet 56% of Americans do not receive treatment for their mental health disorder. Having "The Talk" with their pre-teen may be something that both the parents and the teen dread of having. Unfortunately, I am at that stage in my life where I am a parent of a teenage boy as well as a pre-teen. While this conversation occurred a few years ago with my oldest son, I have learned a few things on when and how to discuss this topic. I learned from my oldest son and our conversation when he was 12, that we should just be open an honest early on. At this age, he was in the 6th grade and already in middle school. I was surprised to know that he was already exposed to various conversations with his friends about sex. Discussions should've occurred around 5th grade instead of the 6th grade. Something about pre-teens and even younger kids now a days is that they already know more than they should at their age. After reviewing the PowerPoint about the status of women around the world, I have several opinions regarding what I have learned. The most surprising facts that I have learned are those that have a tragic impact on women in the 21st century. Although we live in America and we still face inequality as women when it comes to labor rights, reproductive rights, and many more injustices, it does not match up with women in other parts of the world. Those facts are tortures of the female genitalia that are still prevalent in parts of Africa. The fact that being sex trafficked is a common situation females face in Asia and central Europe. The horrors that women face are unfortunately still issues that need to be addressed worldwide.
